Backspin is a tennis term that applies on the way how a ball is turning. When a ball is played with backspin, the ball is spinning backwards.
To apply backspin on a ball, the ball is hit with a slice. When a backspin/slice ball is played correctly, the ball will bounce less high than a topspin ball. That means that it's harder for an opponent to reach the ball in time.
